We are looking to recruit an experienced Design Manager to oversee the management of the Design and CAD teams; the role is diverse, challenging and rewarding.

The Design Manager will ensure that the department produces designs that conform to statutory requirements, meet the design specification and are commercially viable. You will be given the opportunity to practice and develop a wide range of skills including specification of HV primary equipment, design of protection and control schemes, reviewing and conducting simulation and modelling studies to demonstrate compliance. As the Design Manager you are likely to be a specialist in a subject area but will have knowledge across a broad spectrum of electrical disciplines.

Duties and responsibilities of the role include, but not limited to:

  • Responsibility for managing the delivery of designs within agreed timeframes and to a high quality that reflect Powersystems reputation as high voltage specialists
  • The ability to manage multiple design projects and prioritise conflicting project deadlines
  • The ability to communicate effectively with clients, consultants and Project Engineers, to understand their expectations and justify your design decisions
  • The ability to support the continued development of Electrical Design Engineers by providing technical guidance
  • The ability to successfully manage a team of engineers and provide wider support for the project engineers for technical queries
  • Ensure that all designs are designed for safety and are compliant with CDM and Health and Safety regulations, including producing design risk assessments, and effectively communicating risks to project engineers and construction operatives
  • Producing standards for technical specifications for primary equipment and protection and control equipment for HV substations operating at voltages from 11 kV to 132 kV
  • Prepare design packages for DNO contestable works and electrical balance of plant works (private works) from 11 kV to 132 kV
  • Work closely with the in-house Design Engineers and CAD technicians to generate equipment layouts, cable route drawings, construction, and legal plans for new HV connections
  • Manage and review simulation studies for generation connections undertaken by other consultants or carried out in-house, including load flow, reactive power capability, fault level analysis, power quality, and harmonic studies to demonstrate compliance with Engineering Recommendations, the Distribution Code, the Grid Code, and industry standards
  • Attend sites for inspection and design purposes and attend manufacturers factory acceptance tests when required
  • Build relationships with clients, and attend design and project co-ordination meetings with clients, their consultants, and DNO and TNO representatives
  • Contribute to the future success of Powersystems and clients
  • Proactively look at ways to enhance the service offered by the business, and improve the efficiency of company processes

Here’s what you need to be successful in the role:

  • Gained relevant experience of high voltage electrical engineering design (11 kV to 132kV) within the electrical contracting or utility industries
  • You will possess excellent technical knowledge and be able to apply this in a practical way
  • HND / Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Right to Work within the UK without limitation
  • Must be available to travel on work related business throughout the UK with overnight stays

Desirable criteria:​

  • A higher degree or post graduate qualification in power systems would be an advantage
  • Have obtained or be working towards professional registration with the IET at IENG / CENG level

There are currently four directors on the trustee board, three employee directors and an independent director.  The board meets regularly once a quarter and additionally as circumstances require.  Participation is usually remote and the time commitment for each quarterly meeting, include preparation and follow-up, is around eight hours.  This is a remunerated role.

Here’s what you need to be successful in the role:

  • 3 years’ experience in installing cables of various types and methods. Supervisory capacity in charge of complex electrical installations or have exceptional technical skill, ability and experience beyond that of previous position
  • Successfully completed and implement SSSTS training
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ relevant experience of electrical engineering within the electrical contracting or utility industries

  • Update and compile company standards to facilitate the production of in-house simulation studies. Setout the studies design process, templates and deliverables for system studies
  • Contribute to the development of in-house design engineers by providing in-house mentoring and training
  • Identify training requirements and suitable external training providers to ensure the continuous development of system studies engineers
  • Provide technical support of our team of electrical design engineers
  • Attend client design meetings (as necessary) in order to provide technical support

  • Manage and review simulation studies for generation connections undertaken by other consultants or carried out in-house, including load flow, reactive power capability, fault level analysis, power quality, and harmonic studies to demonstrate compliance with Engineering Recommendations, the Distribution Code, the Grid Code, and industry standards
  • Attend sites for inspection and design purposes and attend manufacturers factory acceptance tests when required
