Powersystems has successfully completed another electrical infrastructure project and handed over Ray Wind Farm to their client Vattenfall.
Fulfilling the contract to provide the design, supply, installation and commissioning services of the 54.4 MW Ray Wind Farm; a 26km 33 kV grid connection route made up of 6 x 33kV power cables, fibre optic cables, over 300 terminations and 4 x overhead line section points, were all undertaken by Powersystems as the Independent Connection Provider (ICP) in the Northern Powergrid region.
Ray Wind Farm is a 16 turbine onshore wind farm project situated on the Ray Estate near Kirkwhelpington in Northumberland. Ray Wind Farm generates enough power every year to meet the equivalent annual electricity demand of over 30,000 UK households.
Powersytems have shown their collaborative ability to work in partnership with the main civil contractor, turbine installer and the Ray Wind Farm client to deliver this project to plan, and provide an extra level of service and support to accommodate additional requirements throughout the project.
Ray Wind farm gained UK Government approval in 2005 and work started in 2015. Now that it is fully operational it is able to provide electricity for 30,000 homes directly into the national grid transmission network, for the benefit of customers across the UK.
Ray Wind Farm Investing in the Community
Following an extensive consultation, in which the local community within 10km of the wind farm shared their views on the fund, Vattenfall appointed a Steering Group of local representatives, tasked with ensuring that the fund is used to provide the greatest possible benefit for local people.
The findings were published in the Ray Wind Farm Community Fund Community Profile Report. A review of the findings has set the priorities for the Fund, these are:
The Ray Wind Farm Small Grants programme
This fund is now open, the programme, is being managed on Vattenfall’s behalf by the Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, and a panel made up of members of the local community will recommend the grant awards.
The improvement of infrastructure to support the social and economic sustainability of the area, such as internet, mobile phone coverage and community transport. A separate £172,000 annual fund is to be managed by a local Community Interest Company which hopes to be up and running later this year.
