Powersystems, high-voltage specialist electrical contractor, is delighted to share that works are progressing well on the design and construction of a new 275 kV substation, including the associated compound and electrical balance of plant works supporting a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
This project represents a significant milestone for Powersystems, encompassing the full design, engineering and construction of a 275 kV substation, providing a critical grid connection to the transmission network and enabling the delivery of essential grid stability services.
Progress Highlights & Key Milestones
- 33 kV switchgear cold commissioning completed, marking a major commissioning milestone
- Above-ground earthing installation well advanced, ensuring compliance with safety and transmission standards
- 33 kV cable terminations completed at the BESS, with remaining switchgear terminations programmed
- Essential and non-essential auxiliary power supplies installed, with distribution boards successfully handed over
- Auxiliary power, communications and fire protection cabling progressing, supporting full system integration
- 275 kV cable installation completed, including erection of temporary structures and scaffolding
- Uplifting of 275 kV cables to steelwork structures completed
- 275 kV busbar installation substantially complete, with final connections programmed
- LV and multicore cabling installation commenced across the wider site
- Grid transformer successfully delivered, representing a critical step towards energisation

Supporting a More Stable, Low-Carbon Grid
The substation and BESS infrastructure under construction will support a 50 MW energy storage facility with a two-hour duration, delivering vital grid stability services through zero-carbon technology. By providing services such as inertia and system support, the development will play a key role in enabling greater penetration of renewable energy while reducing reliance on fossil fuel generation.
Projects of this nature are essential to modernising the UK’s electricity network, ensuring resilience, improving power quality and supporting national decarbonisation objectives. In addition to the environmental benefits, the project is also delivering local economic value through skilled employment and supply-chain engagement during construction.
