Powersystems Energises 67 MW Benbrack Wind Farm

September 11, 2025

Powersystems successfully connected 15 Vestas turbines to the grid on 7 September 2025. Together, they deliver a total export capacity of 67.1 MW. Working alongside Jones Bros Civil Engineering, Powersystems delivered the scheme for Red Rock Renewables and connected it to the Scottish Power Transmission Network.

Powersystems provided the complete Balance of Plant (BoP) electrical package, including:

  • 33 kV switchgear
  • 33 kV and fibre-optic cables, with terminations in substations and turbine switchgear
  • Auxiliary transformer and LV auto-changeover panel
  • Earthing systems, ASM/DSM panel, and SCADA equipment
  • Grid compliance transducers, PQM units, and distance local control panels fabricated in Powersystems’ workshop

Powersystems ensured compliance with Health & Safety and CDM regulations, while managing the project and performing HV SAP duties.

Powersystems has now connected more than 4 GW of wind generation to the UK National Grid. Its collaboration with Jones Bros and Natural Power, on behalf of Red Rock Power, adds another landmark project to its Scottish portfolio.

Graham Stewart, Project Manager at Powersystems, said:

“Our team brings vast experience to every wind farm project. Benbrack has given us another chance to showcase our skills, while also supporting the local economy through regional supply chains and resources.”

The project was first proposed in 2012 and secured planning consent in 2017. The wind farm consists of 15 turbines, each reaching a maximum tip height of 149 metres. Construction began in October 2022.

Key milestones included:

  • July 2023 – Jones Bros completed the first turbine foundation and more than 10 km of access tracks.
  • Early 2024 – Vestas began turbine installation.
  • September 2025 – First power generation achieved.
  • End of 2025 – Scheduled completion with all infrastructure fully commissioned.

Once complete, the Benbrack Wind Farm will provide clean, renewable electricity for over 20,000 households. It is expected to cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by 31.7 tonnes.

Moreover, the project delivers significant local benefits. In particular, ownership is shared between 5,600 households, 19 SMEs, and commercial property investor Bruntwood. Meanwhile, Natural Power oversaw construction management, ensuring the development met strict environmental standards while also maximising community engagement and local investment.

The successful energisation of Benbrack reinforces Scotland’s leadership in onshore wind energy. The country has ambitious targets of 20 GW of onshore wind by 2030, and projects like Benbrack are crucial in delivering that vision.

As Scotland continues to expand its renewable capacity, Powersystems remains at the forefront of connecting onshore wind projects safely, reliably, and on schedule.
