Powersystems, a leading specialist in high-voltage electrical engineering, is powering the transition to a sustainable future with a major achievement at Rag Lane Solar Farm. The project has reached a key milestone with the successful manufacture and delivery of both the National Grid Energy Distribution (NGED) Substation and the Client Substation for the new 33 kV installation.
Fully Fitted Off-Site Substations
To streamline construction and accelerate delivery, both substations were fully assembled off-site. This included:
- Switchgear for reliable power management
- Lighting and small power systems
- Auxiliary transformers
Pre-fitting these critical components off-site reduces the amount of on-site work, helping the project progress more efficiently while minimising disruption and maintaining strict safety standards.

Powering Over 10,000 Homes
Once operational, the 40 MW solar development will generate enough clean electricity to power over 10,000 homes, making a substantial contribution to the UK’s low-carbon ambitions. This project not only supports national climate targets but also strengthens local energy resilience, ensuring communities have access to reliable renewable energy.
Precision, Planning, and Safety
Delivering infrastructure at this scale requires meticulous planning and execution. The project has relied on:
- Complex lifts and installations to position heavy equipment safely
- Detailed planning to coordinate multiple teams and tasks
- Close collaboration across Powersystems, DNO, and client teams
A strong safety culture underpins every stage of work, ensuring that efficiency does not come at the expense of worker wellbeing or project quality.

Project Overview
- Project Size: 50 MW solar farm
- Connection: Contestable 33 kV cable route and substations
- Project Voltage: 33 kV
- DNO Area: NGED
- Powersystems Scope: Contestable connection for 7.9 km 33 kV grid route, civils works, DNO substation, and client substation
This milestone represents a critical step forward in delivering a renewable energy infrastructure that is efficient, safe, and sustainable, demonstrating Powersystems’ expertise in supporting the UK’s energy transition.
