Powersystems was proud to attend this year’s Onshore Wind Conference, co-organised by Scottish Renewables and RenewableUK, which returned to Edinburgh on September 16–17. The sold-out event brought together over 1,000 delegates from across the UK and beyond — developers, policymakers, grid specialists, engineers, and financiers — all united by a shared goal: to accelerate the next phase of onshore wind growth in the UK.
The past year has been transformative for the sector. With the de facto ban lifted in England and the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan setting clear decarbonisation targets, onshore wind is once again positioned as a cornerstone of the UK’s clean energy future. That said, the industry continues to navigate complex challenges — from evolving grid and market reform, to planning constraints, supply chain pressures, and rising project delivery costs.
Chris Stark CBE, Head of Mission Control for Clean Power 2030, opened the conference with an energising address, setting an optimistic tone for the two days ahead. He was followed by Michael Shanks MP, Minister for Energy, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to scaling renewable infrastructure and removing barriers to deployment.
Sessions throughout the event delved into critical areas shaping the future of onshore wind:
- Electricity network upgrades and how they can unlock new project capacity
- Planning system reform to accelerate consent times
- Biodiversity and community engagement in wind development
- Routes to market for independent generators
- Supply chain resilience and innovation opportunities
The atmosphere was one of collaboration and momentum — a recognition that success will depend on coordination across government, industry, and communities.
Media interest was particularly strong, with coverage from The Scotsman, Financial Times, reNews, and Energy Voice.
- The Scotsman published a feature column, “Scotland set for outsized role in delivering the UK’s onshore wind”, highlighting Scotland’s leadership role in the sector.
- reNews covered the conference under “UK onshore wind must show its value” and followed up with a detailed two-page spread in its September 25 print edition.
These articles make for excellent reading if you get a chance — they capture both the optimism and the realism shaping the UK’s onshore wind journey.
As Powersystems continues to play an active role in grid connections and renewable integration across the UK, attending key industry events like this helps us stay at the forefront of policy, technology, and innovation driving the energy transition forward.
