Powersystems cable installation contract for world’s largest offshore wind farm Dogger Bank

Powersystems has announced they has been awarded the electrical cable installation works contract for Dogger Bank Wind Farm by Jones Bros Civil Engineering, one of the UK’s leading civil engineering contractors, headquartered in Ruthin, North Wales.

Powersystems have been appointed to construct the 2.4 Gigawatt (GW) Dogger Bank wind farm A and B onshore cable route. The site will be located over 130 km of the coast of North East England and will be “capable” of powering up to 4.5 million homes each year when complete in 2026.

In September 2019 Powersystems were awarded and completed the design contract to design the 320 kV HVDC on shore cable route, and the 400 kV cable route for Dogger Bank Wind Farm.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm is a joint venture between SSE Renewables and Equinor (formerly Statoil) and is made up of three offshore wind farm sites in the North Sea:  Dogger Bank A (1.2 GW),   Dogger Bank B (1.2 GW) and Dogger Bank C (1.2 GW).   All three sites were successful in the UK’s September 2019 Contracts for Difference (CfD) auctions.

The 3.6 GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm project, this project has already been over a decade in the making.

Powersystems will be installing the onshore cable infrastructure for the Dogger Bank A, and Dogger Bank B sites. The works will also involve logistics with delivering 192 cable drums. (120 KM of HVDC cable and approx. 24 km of 400 kV cable)

The onshore infrastructure includes the installation of approximately 20 miles of electrical cables within ducts. The ducts will be installed within trenches and where required via drilling under existing infrastructure and natural obstacles.

The completed onshore cable will transport the power generated by the two offshore wind farm sites, Dogger Bank A, and Dogger Bank B from the landfall point at Ulrome to the new convertor stations (one per project) in the South of Beverley. The cable route will connect to the existing National Grid substation at Creyke Beck, Cottingham.

GE Renewable Energy Ltd, has confirmed it has received the worlds single biggest order for wind turbines. The agreement includes the purchase of 190 units of the Haliade-X wind turbines with a 5-year service and warranty agreement.

The Dogger Bank project will the first in the world to feature the 13 MW rated turbine, it will have 107m long blades, 220 m rotor. One spin of the Haliade-X wind turbine can generate enough electricity to power a UK household for 2 days.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm will play a critical role in the UK’s effort to achieve net-zero through the use of low-carbon fuel sources.

The full works are expected to take approximately two years to complete.

Experience in the design and installation of high voltage electrical infrastructure has placed Powersystems in a position ideally suited to carry out the onshore  design and cable installation for offshore windfarms. Recently completed projects include; The Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm which is a 348 MW offshore wind farm located on the west coast of the UK in the Irish Sea. It consists of an original 90 MW wind farm commissioned in 2007 and a 258 MW extension completed in 2017. As well as Race Bank Wind Farm, which was a 573 MW Round 2 offshore wind farm located 27 km north of Blakeney Point off the coast of Norfolk. The farm was commissioned in February 2018.

Since Powersystems first wind farm installation at Goonhilly Downs in 1992 they have been actively involved with wind farm projects ranging from single turbines to 60 plus turbine sites. Powersystems engineers are experienced in the design, specification, installation and commissioning of the wind farm substation; switchgear, transformers, cable infrastructure, earth systems and SCADA cabling, enabling the complete installation to be carried out.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm is another example of UK leading the world in the generation of #greenenergy and helping to get closer to reaching #zeroemission targets. The future looks bright.

About Dogger Bank Wind Farm:

  • Consent was granted in 2015, located in the North Sea water depth ranges from 20m to 35m
  • Creyke Beck A and B are approximately 130km from the Yorkshire Coast, with Teesside A located approximately 200km offshore
  • Each project will have an installed capacity of 1.2 GW and will be able to power 1.5 million homes. Together, the projects can generate approximately 5% of the UK’s estimated electricity demand
  • The first project is expected to achieve first power in 2023
  • The Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) will be 12+ MW
  • The WTGs will be installed on monopile foundations
  • The transmission system will be High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) due to long distance to grid connection point.
  • The Contract for Difference is a 15-year contract which will be indexed for inflation. The strike price will be paid for every MWh generated by the wind farms during the contract. After the CfD contract ends, the projects will receive the market price for electricity
