A Remarkable Tribute to Robbie Meiklem

August 20, 2025

On 15th August, Robert Meiklem stepped into the boxing ring not just to fight an opponent, but to honour the memory of his beloved son, Robbie. What unfolded was more than a sporting event — it was a deeply moving tribute to Robbie’s life and a rallying call for mental health awareness.

“This night means so much — in memory of Robbie and so many others we hold in our hearts. Every punch thrown and every cheer from the crowd carries their spirit forward,” Robert reflected.

In recent months, Robert has shared his son’s story publicly, with The Sun newspaper dedicating its front page and a centre spread to Robbie’s journey. The response has been overwhelming, bringing Robbie’s memory into the hearts of thousands across Scotland.

The momentum carried forward with the Robbie Meiklem Memorial Trophy Final, hosted at Ayr United. The event drew a remarkable turnout of fans, friends, and celebrities, united in celebration of Robbie’s life. To commemorate the occasion, Robert spent six months creating a bespoke football programme, handed out freely to all attendees — a labour of love and remembrance.

Robert’s commitment didn’t stop there. Just twelve weeks ago, he began an intensive training programme to prepare for the Kris Boyd Charity Boxing Night, an event that sold out its 450 tickets long before fight night. Colleagues from Powersystems, RJ McLeod, and other wind farm companies joined in support, ensuring the arena was filled with familiar faces and unwavering encouragement.

Every ticket sold contributed to the cause: £10 from each went directly to the Kris Boyd Charity, furthering its mission to raise awareness and support for mental health.

The atmosphere on the night was electric. The heat in the ring was intense, with boxers collapsing backstage after their bouts, but Robert remained composed, fuelled by determination and the memory of his son.

Scottish television cameras followed his every move, filming for a Christmas documentary that will capture the raw emotion of his journey. Despite the nerves, Robert rose to the occasion.

In the first round, he delivered two standing eight counts to his opponent. Early in the second, after a relentless flurry of punches, the referee called the fight. Victory by technical knockout.

The crowd erupted. It wasn’t just a win in the ring — it was a triumph of love, resilience, and remembrance.

Among the most poignant moments was Robert’s embrace with his two daughters after the fight. In the photograph taken that night, a teddy bear sits quietly in the background — the bear gifted to him by Colin Gray, containing the beat of Robbie’s heart.

“Having Robbie there and in my corner meant so much to me,” Robert shared with emotion.

Robert expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who has stood beside him — colleagues, friends, and family. “May I take this opportunity to thank everyone at Powersystems for their continued support in the fight against mental health, and their support to me as both an employee and as part of the Powersystems family.”

What Robert achieved on 15th August was not simply a boxing victory. It was a father keeping his son’s spirit alive, a community rallying together, and a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness.

Robbie’s memory continues to inspire strength, unity, and hope.

Founded in January 2018, The Kris Boyd Charity focuses on the advancement of health by raising awareness of mental health issues.
