Powersystems, one of the UK’s leading high-voltage electrical engineering specialists, has announced an opportunity for a new Independent Chair to join its Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) and help guide the company through the next stage of its ambitious growth journey.
Since becoming employee-owned in 2019, Powersystems has experienced transformational growth — from a £13 million to a £68 million turnover business — and now employs more than 160 people across the UK. Employee ownership has been at the heart of this success, driving innovation, engagement, and shared achievement across every level of the business.
Employee Ownership: A Model for Empowerment and Success
Employee ownership at Powersystems has been a transformative force, delivering measurable benefits across people, performance, and stakeholder relationships. The company’s Employee Forum, and Trust Board ensure every employee-owner’s voice is heard, empowering teams to shape the future of the business together.
This collaborative culture has built a sense of shared purpose and accountability — helping Powersystems attract and retain talented people who thrive in an environment where they can make a real impact. Initiatives such as profit share, employee recognition programmes, and learning and development opportunities celebrate success and reinforce the company’s “people first” philosophy.
Engineering Excellence and Sustainable Growth
With over 48 years of industry expertise, Powersystems continues to deliver world-class electrical engineering projects across renewable energy, battery storage, and grid stability sectors. Since the transition to employee ownership, the company has more than doubled in size, expanding its reach and capabilities while maintaining its reputation for technical excellence and trusted delivery.
At the heart of this success is a culture of innovation and accountability. Employee ownership has empowered people at every level to think creatively, collaborate openly, and deliver complex infrastructure projects efficiently and safely. The result is a business that doesn’t just adapt to change — it leads it.
The Role of the Independent Chair
The Independent Chair plays a pivotal role in supporting the EOT and ensuring that Powersystems’ employee-owners continue to benefit from strong, transparent, and effective governance. Working alongside three employee directors and two independent directors, the Chair helps uphold the company’s values, ensures the operating company board remains accountable to the Trust, and provides guidance and balance in key decision-making.
This role offers an opportunity for an experienced leader to contribute to a business that combines commercial excellence with a people-driven purpose. The successful candidate will bring proven governance expertise, commercial insight, and a passion for fostering collaboration and integrity within an employee-owned environment.
The board meets regularly once a quarter and additionally as circumstances require. Participation is usually remote, though some meetings are held in our office in Yate, near Bristol. This is a remunerated role.
Looking Ahead: A Shared Future of Innovation and Impact
Powersystems’ employee ownership model extends beyond the company itself, strengthening relationships with clients, partners, and communities. The business has completed more than 1,495 projects and connected 9.1 GW of renewable and low-carbon generation capacity to the UK grid — contributing to around 10% of the nation’s renewable energy and advancing the UK’s net zero ambitions.
As Powersystems continues to grow, its commitment to shared success, innovation, and sustainability remains at the core of everything it does. The appointment of a new Independent Chair marks another important milestone in that journey.
