Powersystems continues to drive the UK’s energy transition with the successful site handover and HV Operational Control of a cutting-edge 57 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This latest project, led by Senior Contracts Manager Alan Bates, marks a significant step forward in reinforcing grid stability and advancing renewable energy integration.
Now fully operational, the BESS actively charges and discharges power to balance supply and demand with expert precision. Since construction began in Summer 2023, the Powersystems team has leveraged deep technical expertise and practical experience to ensure seamless system integration. Once fully commissioned, the facility will have the capacity to store enough electricity to power over 100,000 homes—further strengthening the resilience of the UK’s electricity network.
This new storage facility plays a vital role in enabling greater renewable energy penetration. Designed to automatically adjust to fluctuations in supply and demand, it will enhance system flexibility while supporting future developments such as electric vehicle (EV) charging and the electrification of public transport—building on the success of its sister project in Oxford.
Accelerating the UK’s Clean Energy Future
As the UK accelerates its transition towards sustainable power, smart energy infrastructure is critical in addressing intermittency and grid resilience. This BESS project exemplifies proper engineering in action, delivering cleaner, more reliable power to the nation while supporting the growth of renewable energy sources.
Alan Bates, Senior Contracts Manager at Powersystems, highlights the importance of this milestone:
“A massive energy shift is underway, and renewables are central to this transformation. Our goal is to support a cleaner, more secure energy future by providing the flexibility needed to integrate higher volumes of renewable power. With every project, Powersystems applies world-class engineering to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and sustainability.”
Building on its strong track record, Powersystems has successfully delivered energy storage facilities in Oxford and Kent since 2021, with additional projects currently under construction in Scotland, Wales, Birmingham, Coventry, and Sundon. The company remains committed to shaping the future of energy, one grid connection at a time.
